Club Sports are organizations that give students the
opportunity to play their favorite sport at a competitive level. The
main differences between a Division I (NCAA) program and a club sports
team is the level of funding, there is no formal recruiting and we do
not have full time coaches. As a club sport, the team receives a limited
annual budget from student fee allocations and generates most of their
operating budget from dues and fund raising activities. Participating on
a club sports team is a good way to keep that competitive edge and have
fun at the same time.
The Polo team at Colorado State has been one of the most successful
clubs in CSU history. The men's team has won the U.S. Polo Association
National Championship in 1990, 1991, and 1999. Our women's program has
qualified for the national tournament almost every year and we have had
several students named to the All American team. The current roster has
about 45 players on it. Both men's and women's teams are currently
ranked 2nd in the nation. Tryouts for the varsity teams (men's &
women's) are held in October. We don't cut anyone who is interested in
learning the game and helping with the club. The collegiate season is in
the spring with the national tournament held in April. Practice is held
three times a week: (TUESDAY) 6:00 p.m., Thursday 6:00p.m, and Friday
afternoons. Each level has its own practice, plus exercising the horses
on the off days.
The Polo team is a member of the USPA (United States Polo Association)
Intercollegiate. We compete against many schools in our region such as;
Texas University, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and New Mexico State.
Students are expected to provide for all expenses except for hotel. The
average cost for a trip is about $800. Dues are paid each semester with
dues being ($250) for beginners, ($450) for JV, and ($650) for varsity.
Minimal costs for players other then varsity will be required. Your cost
for the club will cover equipments as well. Your mallet, tack, and horse
are provided, but students must provide their own boots and helmet.
